Match Report

CF Montréal secured their spot in the 2021 Canadian Championship Semi-Final Round with a 3:1 victory over HFX Wanderers.

Cory Bent opened the scoring for HFX in the 27th minute with an individual effort that started with a forced turnover and ended with a beautiful strike from outside of the box finding the back of the net.

Matko Miljevic would even the scoring in the 35th minute as he got his left foot onto a ball cut back into the box from Zorhan Bassong. Just moments later Miljevic hit the woodwork which kept the match even going into half.

Both teams threatened a winner, but it was the second-half substitute Ballou Tabla in the 90th minute who would score for CF Montréal as he smashed his shot into the top corner of the HFX net.

Tabla would score another just moments later to cement CF Montréal’s spot in the 2021 Canadian Championship Semi-Finals.

Both teams featured 5 Canadian players each in their XI.

The starting XI for HFX Wanderers featured Canadian Goalkeeper Kieran Baskett behind a back line of Peter Schaale, Jems Geffrard, Jake Ruby and Ericks Santos. Captain Andre Rampersad, Marcello Polisi, Joao Morelli, and Jéréme Gagnon-Laparé made up the midfield. Cory Bent and Samuel Salter rounded out the attack.

HFX Head Coach Stephen Hart made a substitution in the 56th minute that saw Akeem Garcia replace Samuel Salter. A double substitution in the 78th minute saw Pierre Lamothe replace goalscorer Cory Bent and Alejandro Oliva come in for Jake Ruby. A 90th minute substitution saw Ericks Santos replaced with Canadian forward Stefan Karajovanovic.

CF Montréal featured Canadian keeper Sebastian Breza with Rudy Camacho, Mustafa Kizza, Joel Waterman, and Zorhan Bassong providing the defensive support. Samuel Piette wore the armband and alongside Ahmed Hamdi, Emanuel Maciel, and Clement Bayiha made up the Montréal midfield with Sunusi Ibrahim up top.

Head coach Wilfried Nancy made a double substitution to start the second half, bringing on the eventual game winning goalscorer Ballou Tabla and Lassi Lappalainen for first half goalscorer Matko Milkevic and Ahmed Hafez. Zachary Brault-Guillard would come on to replace Mustafa Kizza in the 67th minute. In the 84th minute Clement Bayiha made way for Bjorn Johnsen. Rida Zouhir would come on for Sunusi Ibrahim in the final minutes of added time.
