Match Report

Valour FC secured their spot in the 2021 Canadian Championship Quarter-Final Round with a 3:2 victory over Atlético Ottawa.

Brian Wright scored the opening goal for Atlético, twisting and turning away from a Valour defender before firing the shot into the back of the net (16’). The goal came against the run of play, as visitors from Winnipeg had been dominating the possession until that point.

Sean Rea equalized for the visitors, driving into the box and getting a clean shot away that beat the Atlético keeper (30’).

The sides continued to exchange chances throughout the first half.

Antoine Coupland looked to be clear through on goal thanks to a perfectly placed pass by Ryan Telfer, but Valour keeper Matthew Silva got a hand up to keep the shot out of the net in the 34’.

In the 43’, Atlético keeper Teodor Obadal made a diving save on Rafael Galhardo’s low shot, and Rea wasn’t able to convert the rebound to give Valour the lead.

Right before halftime, some beautiful footwork by Telfer allowed him to get past two defenders and his cross was headed into the net by Wright, but the attacker was ruled offside.

The two Canadian Premier League teams were tied 1:1 at halftime.

Atlético nearly took the lead in the 56’ minute, as Milovan Kapor’s flick at the back post forced Silva to make a save, and the keeper was able to tip the ball over the crossbar.

It was the visitors who would take the lead on a blistering counterattack. Rocco Romeo stole the ball in his own half and charged forward, finding William Akio in space on the right wing. Akio put a perfectly weighted, first-time pass across the box and Austin Ricci made no mistake, hammering his shot into the roof of the net (60’).

Ricci doubled his goal tally just three minutes later. Moses Dyer sent a long ball from deep in the Valour half over the Atlético defenders, perfectly picking out Ricci who still had a lot of work to do, carrying the ball to the edge of the box and then cutting inside to get a shot away (63’) to give the Valour FC the 3:1 lead.

Atlético got one back in the final minutes with a perfectly place one-time shot by Victor Martinez who found himself unmarked in the middle of the penalty area, but it was too little, too late.

Atlético Ottawa’s starting XI featured Canadian Teodor Obadal in goal. Ryan Telfer and Miguel Acosta were joined on defence by Canadians Keesean Ferdinand, Matthew Arnone, and Milovan Kapor, who captained the side. Canadian Antoine Coupland combined with Victor Martinez and Alberto Soto to make up the midfield. Rafael Nuñez Mata and Canadian Brian Wright rounded out the attack.

Atlético head coach Mista made a double substitution in the 64’, bringing on Drew Beckie and Tevin Shaw for Acosta and Coupland. Raul Uche replaced Wright (72’) and Zach Verhoven came on in place of Ferdinand (80’).

The starting XI for Valour FC featured Canadian goalkeeper Matthew Silva who captained the visitors. Arnold Bouka Moutou and Canadians Anthony Mikhael and Rocco Romeo formed the defensive line. Canadians Stefan Cebara and Sean Rea were joined by Moses Dyer, Raphael Ohin, and Rafael Galhardo in midfield. Canadians Austin Ricci and William Akio rounded out the side.

Valour head coach Robert Gale brought on Jared Ulloa, Masta Kacher, and Federico Peña for Akio, Rea, and Cebara (70’), Daryl Fordyce in place of Galhardo (79’), and Amir Soto for Mikhael (90’).
