Match Report

HFX Wanderers FC won 2:0 over Guelph United FC in the first round of the 2022 Canadian Championship.

The Canadian Premier League side dominated play throughout most of the match and had the lion share of chances against the League1 Ontario champions.

In the 21’, an HFX Wanderers header stuck the post with force and then in the follow-up play Guelph’s Harvey Marchant fouled Mohamed Omar and Wanderers were awarded a penalty. Akeem Garcia stepped up to take the spot kick and fired it into the bottom corner to give HFX the 1:0 lead (22’).

The best opportunity for Guelph United came in the 32’ when a great through ball was played for Jace Kotsopoulos to run on to. The pass was a bit too heavy and HFX Wanderers goalkeeper Christian Oxner came out aggressively to clear the ball away from the attacker.

In the 35’, Wanderers came inches away from doubling the lead, as a corner kick from Pierre Lamothe was met with force by Andre Rampersad and rang off the woodwork before being cleared by the Guelph defence.

HFX Wanderers FC went into halftime with the 1:0 lead.

The visitors doubled their lead part way through the second half. Aidan Daniels received the pass on a low corner to the top of the box, took one touch to create some space for himself and then hammered a shot into the net (61’).

In the 86’, Samuel Salter found himself in behind the Guelph defence and flicked the ball past goalkeeper Svyatoslav Artemenko, but missed the net by inches as the ball rolled just outside of the post.

Guelph United’s Starting XI featured nine Canadian players, including Svyatoslav Artemenko in goal. Canadian Marko Maletic lined up beside Armardo Oakley and Harvey Marchant in defence. It was an all-Canadian midfield made up of Alexander Zis, Evan Dick, Lucas Doros, Dion Stergiotis, and Jack Sears. Canadians Marcel Zajac and Jace Kotsopoulos started up front.

Head coach Keith Mason brought on Reggie Laryea in place of Jack Sears (46’), Tomasz Skublak for Jace Kotsopoulos (60’), Jared Agyemang for Alexander Zis (75’), and Devante Walker for Evan Dick (87’).

HFX Wanderers FC’s Starting XI featured Canadian goalkeeper Christian Oxner behind the defensive line of Canadians Zachary Fernandez, Mateo Restrepo, Mohamed Omar, and Colin Gander. Akeem Garcia and Andre Rampersad started in midfield alongside Canadians Pierre Lamothe and Aidan Daniels. The HFX forwards were Cory Bent and Canadian Samuel Salter.

Head coach Stephen Hart brought on Marcello Polisi for Pierre Lamothe (64’), Ryan Robinson and Alex Marshall in place of Akeem Garcia and Cory Bent (74’), and Peter Schaale for Aidan Daniels (81’).
