Toronto FC advances to the 2022 Canadian Championship Finals

Toronto FC came out winners after a hard-fought 4:0 victory over 2021 Canadian Championship winners CF Montreal to advance to the 2022 Canadian Championship Finals.

As the match started, Toronto FC’s Jayden Nelson ran past Montreal defenders to get inside the box for a shot but missed just wide.

Toronto FC opened the scoring with Ayo Akinola scoring inside the box in front of the net after receiving a pass from Luca Petrasso from the left of the box in the 40’

Akinola had another chance at goal right before halftime in the 45+2’ but CF Montreal’s James Pantemis made an incredible save.

In the 54‘, Pozuelo passed the ball up to Ayo Akinola who ran inside the box then fought off a defender and fired a shot off his right foot which hit off the top crossbar and down into the net for his second goal of the night.

Toronto FC scored their third goal after Jesus Jimenez scored off of a corner kick inside the box that was deflected off of the Montreal goalkeeper in the 75’.

In the 78’ Jonathan Osorio ran it down the left side of the box and passed it to Jayden Nelson who then it right again for Alejandro Pozuelo who gracefully chipped it over the goalie for Toronto’s fourth goal of the night to make the score 4:0.

Ayo Akinola received the Gatorade Performance of the Match after scoring two goals in the match.

Toronto FC’s Starting XI featured five Canadian players: Jayden Nelson, Ayo Akinola, Deandre Kerr, Lucas Petrasso and Kosi Thompson.

Head coach Bob Bradley of Toronto FC brought on Jonathan Osorio for Ralph Priso (62’), Chrys Mavinga and Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty came in for Ayo Akinola and Kosi Thompson (73’), Jacob Shaffelburg and Jordan Perruzza for Lucas Petrasso and Jayden Nelson.

CF Montreal featured six players in the Starting XI: James Pantemis (GK), captain Samuel Piette, Zorhan Bassong, Alistair Johnston, Ismael Kone and Mathieu Choiniere.
