Canada’s men’s national team scored three unanswered goals to overhaul a one-goal deficit and register a 3:1 win over Jamaica in a men’s international friendly on Tuesday night at BMO Field in Toronto.
The win was Canada’s first under new Head Coach Benito Floro in what was Floro’s debut in front of a home crowd. Canada’s also now unbeaten in three international games in 2014.
Kemar Lawrence had given Jamaica the lead but one minute after going down, Canada responded through David Edgar before taking control in the second half and picking up goals by Marcel de Jong and Tosaint Ricketts.
Lawrence had given Jamaica the lead in the 30th minute when his left-footed free kick went up and over the Canadian wall and into the corner to the left of Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan. Borjan managed to get a hand to it but it wasn’t enough.
About a minute later, Canada responded right away as, in a move right off the training ground, Edgar got on the end of a Patrice Bernier corner kick and volleyed home a stunner from outside the 18-yard box to quickly level matters.
Borjan had to be sharp on a number of occasions late in the first half and into the second half to keep the game tied and his teammates paid him back by giving in the lead in sensational fashion.
In what was a carbon copy to the Jamaican goal, de Jong swung in a left-footed free kick that left Jamaican goalkeeper Andre Blake rooted to the spot as he could only watch helplessly as the ball found the corner in the 68th minute.
In what was a more workmanlike goal than the previous two, Canada got their insurance in the 73rd minute when Simeon Jackson let a shot go on the rush from the right-hand side. Blake was handcuffed by the shot and couldn’t hold the ball and Ricketts was there to smash the ball into the empty goal.
