Ottawa, Ontario- The Canadian Soccer Association and Women’s World Cup Team head coach Even Pellerud today announced the schedule for the Women’s World Cup team for the next six months. The team will participate in at least nine international friendlies and one tournament before August 2001.
The team will play its first international game of the year against the Moroccan National Team in a two-game series on February 10 and 12 in Casablanca. From March 5-19, Canada will compete at the prestigious 8th annual Algarve Cup tournament in Portugal and will attempt to improve on last year’s fifth-place finish.
Canada will travel to Europe to face the Swedish National Team on June 10 for an international friendly before heading to Germany for two friendlies against the 1999 World Cup quarterfinalists on June 14 and 17. Pellerud’s squad will culminate their European tour with a visit to Norway where they will take on the 2000 Olympic Gold Medallists on June 19.
Canada will re-assemble for a home and away series against the United States in Toronto on June 30 and Atlanta (still to be confirmed) on July 3. This will mark the first meeting between the two countries since Canada’s 3-1 victory over the 1999 World Cup Champions on November 11, 2000.
Canada will first host the U.S. at Varsity Stadium on June 30 in a doubleheader also featuring Canada’s Under-19 Team against their American counterparts. The Under-19 game will kick-off at 4:45 EST with the World Cup squads facing each other at 7:00 p.m. EST.
The balance of the Women’s World Cup 2001 schedule will be announced later in the year and could include further competition over the next six months.
