September 2012: McKenna, Cameron named Canada Soccer Players of the Month

Kevin McKenna and Tiffany Cameron earn top honours for September.

The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to recognize Kevin McKenna and Tiffany Cameron as the Canada Soccer Players of the Month for September 2012.

In September 2012, McKenna was Canada’s player of the match in the 7 September FIFA World Cup Qualifiers at BMO Field in Toronto. The Canadian captain led Canada to a 1:0 victory over Panama, helping the defence post a clean sheet victory in front of a thrilled Canadian crowd. After a second match in Canada colours (an 0:2 away loss to group leader Panama), McKenna returned his club FC Köln in the German 2.Bundesliga, helping the team turn around its early season misfortune with two wins, one draw and one loss. McKenna played in three of those matches, including an 0:0 home draw against FC St. Pauli and a 2:1 home win over FSV Frankfurt.

McKenna has been a member of Canada’s national team since 2000. He is currently taking part in his fourth cycle of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, having also played in one FIFA Confederations Cup and five editions of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Now 32 years old, the Calgary-born centre back was just 20 years old when he made his debut for Canada on 27 May 2000. He has made 61 appearances at the international “A” level.

As for Cameron, the 20-year striker from Mississauga, ON scored seven goals in eight matches for the University of Ohio Buckeyes. She scored her seven goals in five Ohio wins, including two-goal games against Duquesne and Northwestern. Overall, the team recorded five wins, one draw and two losses in the month of September, improving its overall record to 7-1-4.

Cameron made her debut with Canada’s national team earlier this year in a pre-tournament camp before the 2012 Cyprus Women’s Cup. She has yet to feature in a women’s international “A” match. At the youth level, Cameron has benefitted from 137 days in national youth projects. In 2008, she represented Canada at both the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Trinidad and Tobago 2008.

Each month, the Canadian Soccer Association will celebrate one male and one female Canadian footballer in recognition of their outstanding performances with country and/or club. The winners will be announced via the Association’s official website,
