THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 9 July 1986
Canada wins 2:1 over USA in its second-ever match, again at the 1986 North American Cup in Blaine, MN (as part of the Sons of Norway annual youth tournament). With just two days rest, several Canadians were nursing injuries, including Cathy Ross who had to have her foot frozen twice during the match. Geraldine Donnelly makes her debut for Canada and scores the first two goals in the women’s program history. Canada’s first-ever goal was assisted by Charmaine Hooper. With the series tied after two matches, the two teams play a third “mini” match of two 15-minute halves which USA wins 3-0 to claim the North American Cup.
THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 11 July 1993
In the team’s opening match at the 1993 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Canada posts a 1:1 draw with Costa Rica. Nick Dasovic scores his first international goal for Canada in the 43rd minute. Costa Rica’s Roy Meyers scores the equaliser in the 81st minute.
THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 12 July 1987
Canada plays its first match in the FIFA U-17 World Cup (then known as the FIFA World U-16 Tournament). Canada falls 0:3 to European champions Italy in front of an opening crowd of 13,500 fans at Varsity Stadium in Toronto.
THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 12 July 2003
Canada wins 1:0 over Costa Rica at the 2003 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Foxboro, MA. Paul Stalteri scores the lone goal of the match.
THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 12 July 2005
Canada wins 2:1 over Cuba at the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Foxboro, MA. Ali Gerba and Atiba Hutchinson score for Canada before Alain Cervantes cuts the lead in half near the end of the match in time added.
THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 14 July 2007
Canada wins 7:0 over Uruguay at the XV Pan American Games in Rio, Brazil. Christine Sinclair scores three goals, the first of which is the 72nd of her international career to set a new national record (surpassing Charmaine Hooper who retired with 71 goals). Katie Thorlakson gets the assist on Sinclair’s record-setting goal.
